Unit 10 : Awareness of Health and Safety in the Creative Media Sector
10.1 Understand the relevant health and safety regulations in the Creative Media sector
1.1 Describe key elements of health and safety regulations, relevant to working in the Creative Media sector.
Health and safety within the creative industry is just as important as any other industry, having many hazards and risks, which is not monitored or managed correctly could result in life threatening injuries. A key element within health and safety risk regulations is lifting, injuries from incorrect lifting can be very serious. Back injuries is the most common injury arising from incorrect handling/lifting of heavy equipment.
Another very common element of health and safety regulations within the creative industry is computer use, spending long periods of time being a computer can cause RSI (Repetitive strain injury) eye damage can also become a problem in the future.
Electrical safety is another sector which is under health and safety regulations. Within the creative industry the use of electronic devices such as computers, cameras, scanners, projectors and lighting equipment are all commonly used and can be a health and safety risk.
1.2 Explain safe working practices for a specific job role in the Creative Media sector
See 1.2 of Unit 6 on my blog where I speak specifically about safe working practices within the Creative Media sector.
1.3 Explain the main employer responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act
It is an employer's duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of their employees and other people who might be affected by their business. Employers must do whatever is reasonably practicable to achieve this. This means making sure that workers and others are protected from anything that may cause harm, effectively controlling any risks to injury or health that could arise in the workplace. Employers have duties under health and safety law to assess risks in the workplace. Risk assessments should be carried out that address all risks that might cause harm in your workplace.
10.2 Be able to comply with relevant health and safety procedures
2.1 Describe the differences between hazards and risks.
Refer to 1.1 of Unit 6 in my blog to find information on the differences between hazards and risks.
2.2 Carry out a risk assessment
Here is part of an up to date risk assessment aimed at the music night sessions we offer at DCAS. As you can see it includes three important factors, what the hazards are, who may be harmed and what control measures are currently in place. All hazards and risks have been identified and thoroughly assessed by the suitable member of staff. Another way we manage the risks are that we continuously discuss with participants ways in which they can avoid any accidents or injuries. It is important that everyone that could be effected by these risks are knowledgable on how, why and what to do if a problem arises. We also keep on top of updating the risk assessments when new risks are identified.
2.3 Report identified hazards and risks to the appropriate parties.
We are continuously up to date with all health and safety procedures throughout the centre and if any risks or hazards are identified they are immediately added to the risk assessments and all members of staff are noted.
2.4 Suggest ways of reducing risks to health and safety in a specific Creative Media job role.
Refer to 1.3 of Unit 6 on my blog where I speak in depth about a specific creative media job role and outlines risks within the workplace and also mentioning precautions that are taken to reduce these risks.
